You need to finish the storyline to be able to quest in hardmode with your level 20 characters.
This is true for each game, Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall individually.
You automatically get the gold and experience after you kill the last “monster” in the explorable area.
To vanquish you have to kill EVERY monster in the explorable area in a single trip in Hard Mode. This can sometimes be tough if some the monsters only spawn if you travel through a certain spot as you won’t see them on your “radar”
In Hard Mode the monsters are of much higher level….at least 20 and up to level 30. Chests can only be opened using lockpicks, but usually drop max damage items…usually Gold, some Purple depending on which area you are in. The Gold they drop is alot more per drop…usually 65-130g depending on where you are.
