Choose the adventures of the WoW.com staff as we level our characters in <It came from the Blog> on Zangarmarsh (US-PvE-H).

Bieber for Sandwichdoc was so predictable. Gregg has informed me that since Queen placed such a close second, he will play that for his next level. Lisiel will be a druid and focus on fishing achievements, and Patent will be getting the It’s Happy Hour Somewhere achievement to celebrate Amy’s taking of the bar exam.

Here’s the schedule for this week:

• Adam Holisky as Adammentat, the level 50 tauren druid, will be on Monday at 11 p.m. EDT
• Anne Stickney as Annephora, the level 41 troll warrior, will be on Tuesday at 1 a.m. EDT (which is Monday at 11 p.m. Zangarmarsh time)
• Robin Torres as Robinemia, the level 29 undead mage: Wednesday, 11 p.m. EDT tentatively
• Amy Schley as Patent, the level 23 troll rogue: Thursday, 10 p.m. EDT
• Lisa Poisso as Prupher the proofreading druid (Lisiel just didn’t fit a tauren): Thursday, 10 p.m. EDT
• Fox Van Allen as Foxlight, the level 22 blood elf paladin: Friday, 8 p.m. EDT
• Michael Sacco as Sahko, the orc warlock; Christian Belt, as Selfloathius, the level 16 blood elf warlock; Elizabeth Harper as Faience, the level 24 troll shaman; Matthew Rossi as Andrenorton, the level 17 troll mage; Michael Gray as Grayfields, the level 17 tauren hunter; and Gregg Reece as Sandwichdoc, the level 15 troll shaman, will be making appearances as they can.

I’m just tentative for Wednesday because I’m moving this weekend. If I do play, I will stream it, and there will be more slaughter of those nasty Syndicate types.

I see that many of you want more PvP adventures. I’m taking suggestions for PvP events, games and/or activities in the comments.

You would think that a priest could dispel bleeds. We can restore people from death and protect them from incoming attacks, yet we can’t plug up one gushing wound? Seems a bit strange, doesn’t it? Are we not masters of healing?

Anyway, today’s column actually has nothing to do with dispelling or bleed effects (other than the author writing today’s column while under the effects of a non-dispellable bleed debuff). It has to do with leveling a priest from levels 40 to 70. Hit the jump and we’ll get to it.

Welcome to another article by elemental shaman specialist Matt Sampson, otherwise known as Binkenstein. By day, he’s a geek; by night, he’s also a geek, but with spreadsheets. He’d also like to point out that Time Warp is just another excuse to bring mages vending machines to raids.

Since I’m still the new guy here, I figure that it’s best to start at the beginning, for it’s a very good place to start (and I’m not intentionally putting song lyrics into my posts, it just happens). Given that Cataclysm is still in beta testing, I’m not going to talk about talents, rotations or even the new spells here.

“But Binks,” you say, “how can you have an article about basics if you don’t include any of those topics?” You can, I say, if you talk about the essential basic you have to get right in your playstyle. This is the thing that turns an average-geared player into a fairly competitive one, makes the top-end raiders great, and without which the guy languishing at the bottom of the DPS table will never get to the top no matter how many best-in-slot items he has.

What I’m talking about is skill. This doesn’t just mean the ability to mash buttons faster or harder, or the bonus of having really low latency (trust me, a good ping for me is in the 300ms range), but rather being situationally aware, knowing when to move, how far to move and what to do while moving. It means thinking a few steps ahead so that when the next event occurs, you’re already in position and ready for it.

Some players will never master the basics. Others don’t even have to try because they’re naturals. For the rest of us (and yes, I mean myself as well), it requires a bit of experimentation, some trial and error and most important of all, guides!

Every Friday, Shifting Perspectives explores issues affecting balance druids and those who group with them. This week, we are watching a moonkin dance with a mushroom once again, mostly because it amuses me, and talking about all the recent beta goodies. Mmmm, I like goodies.

I do believe I made a promise last week that I’d discuss some Cataclysm information this week, and I intend to make good on that promise. There’s certainly quite a lot of information to talk about, should you actually be a person who sleeps at a decent hour like most folks; luckily for all of you, I am not one of those people. As per usual, later into the night for most of us, Blizzard released another beta patch with a number of balance changes: a talent tree polish (a basic one, but a polish pass nonetheless) and yet another revision of Eclipse. There’s actually a good deal to be excited for this time around. Now, we aren’t paladins, so I wouldn’t be jumping out of your chain to go running naked down the street screaming in joy … But a little “whooo!” is appropriate.

Before we get started talking about all of the new changes, let me first mention a few things that are currently missing, bugged or simply not yet implemented. First and foremost, Eclipse in of itself does not currently work in beta. The bar works, you can shift the bar in every direction that you like, and the procs certainly work; however, the procs currently don’t actually do anything. There’s no bonus damage there at all, but this a bug from the mastery change when they switched over the talent trees. This actually brings up the next point: We still do not have any specialization effects as of yet, and frankly, I’m a bit at a loss as to what they might end up being. Previously, I assumed that they would merely be the old mastery effects, but looking at elemental shaman, I don’t think that will be the case.

It is safe to assume that one of our mastery effects is going to be Vengeance, to help difference ourselves from other druids. Another will likely be pushback resistances, and I’d venture to guess that the old Wrath of Cenarius benefit will also be baked in there. If there will be anything else, I cannot really say. Last but certainly not least, there are still a few things missing from the talent trees — the effects of Improved Moonkin Form still haven’t been found anywhere else that I’ve seen, anyway — so I still wouldn’t expect this to be the last pass on the druid talent trees. Things are still very likely to change from how they stand now, so don’t get too upset. With that out of the way, let’s get started.

Well, Chase decided against using “Holy Powah!” as the title for his paladin article on the subject for healadins, so I am selfishly going to grab it.

For those of you who haven’t been keeping up with paladins since the Twitter developer chat on Friday, we’re getting overhauled yet again and more deeply than ever before. Not only are things being simplified and condensed again like we saw at the beginning of Wrath, but we’re getting an additional resource system on top of mana. That’s right, additional and on top of mana, which means we’re going to be the second (or third?) mana-based class with an extra resource bar to watch.

This new system is called holy power, and no, it isn’t referring to a talent in the holy tree that adds crit. It is a mixture of combo points and runic power. This whole conversation is going to take a while (and a couple of blue quotes), so let’s continue after the break.

Every Tuesday, Shifting Perspectives explores issues affecting feral/restoration druids and those who group with them.

For a long time, I’ve been kicking an article around on the art of the 5-man pull. Knowing how and when to pull is arguably the foundation of a smooth dungeon run, and it’s certainly among the first skills that any tank needs to develop. While a not-insignificant portion of one’s ability to pull cleanly only arrives courtesy of experience with a wide variety of players, there are a few rules that approach universal status. Moreover, I expect them to be equally useful when I hit the new Cataclysm dungeons and have to figure out how to tank for a group safely in a new environment with new mobs.

The more I wrote on pulling, the more I realized that the subject can be divided into two very distinct categories: what happens before you pull, and what happens while you’re pulling. This week’s column addresses the former. Everything I am about to tell you in this column is something that you, as an experienced tank, will eventually do in the space of a second without even realizing you’re doing it.

For Gnomeregan! is where the members of <B.L.O.G.> on Shadow Council (US-RP-A) roleplay guild meetings as part of an in-blog and in-game RP campaign. The rules for this campaign are: no ERP (Erotic RolePlay) and no vampires (though death knights are welcome). Everyone is invited to participate. Assume that to get into the guild, you at least pretended to be in full use of your faculties and are willing to fight for the cause. You are all welcome to join us here in the comments and those who wish to play with us in-game should friend Peenk and ask for an invite on Shadow Council (US-RP-A).

Thank you for coming to this emergency meeting. Our representative with Operation Gnomeregan has contacted me with the news that many new refugees are about to arrive at Coldridge Valley. They have requested that we accommodate them by incorporating the refugees into our guild and feeding them.

Hands Springsprocket has also contacted me. It seems that he needs to get a large number of supplies to Thunderbrew Distillery. So we are not only going to allow these refugees to join us, we are going to put them to work. And then we’ll sit down and have a party, to relax and welcome our new members.

I know this is short notice, but we must mobilize! Meet at the Coldridge Pass in Coldridge Valley at 9 p.m. on Tuesday. I will give further instructions at that time.

We’ve talked a bit about character endings. Death is a fact of life and is thus a fact of roleplay. We’re in a war story, after all, and it is somewhat inevitable that some characters will pass away. Someone may decide to end his character himself or he may have his character taken away from him. No matter exactly how it comes to the conclusion, many characters will experience death in their lives.

It therefore falls on us to roleplay out that grief. Your character is experience a significant experience. It may just be an acquaintance who’s passed away peacefully or it could be as meaningful as a lover being cut down before their time. Your character will have emotions and thoughts, and you want the chance to express them.

There are tricks to it, of course. You want the chance to roleplay this life change event without being obnoxious. Sure, you could fall on your knees in the middle of Ironforge and gnash your teeth and moan in misery. If you feel like beating your chest and back with a whip for everyone to see is the best expression of your character’s angst, don’t let me stop you. But at least a few other players will likely not respond with the gravitas and seriousness you’d like. Let’s review some methods for getting your grief out for all to see, without being obnoxious about it.

How can you tell a good raider from a bad raider?

• GearScore? NO. Often times, people will rely on a numerical gear score, but this is not a good way to judge player quality. Very good players will have low gear scores when starting out, and very bad players who have been persistent or been carried can have very high scores. GearScore is not an indicator of goodness or badness; it’s purely an indication of how much time and luck the person has had on that character.
• Achievements? NO. Some group leaders request, “Link achievement, please,” but this is not a good method, either. All this indicates is that the person was in the raid when the boss died. You don’t know if they were No. 1 DPS or died three seconds into the fight, the same as they do during every fight they’ve ever been in.

So before you can determine how tell a good player from a bad player, you should understand what makes a “good player.”

This week, the Drama Mamas help a reader whose desire to reserve sharing her email address and online status for her real-life friends is heating up her WoW friends list — and they’re boiling over at not being included.

Hi Drama Mamas, I’ve decided to only add people as Real ID friends who are RL friends that play on another server. I’m one of those people who sometimes like to hop on a character unknown to the folks I usually play with and spend some hours ingame on my own or with my boyfriend. However, I do have a lot of ingame friends I’m pretty close with and talk about a lot of things apart from the game.

After installing the patch and logging on my main, it took only half an hour before I got the first whisper, containing an email adress and asking me to add them via Real ID. I told the person no, I’m only going to add very few RL friends to that list. I recieved a very sulky reply. Today the scenario repeated itself, meaning two days of playing very little have passed and two people are already angry at me for not adding them. Is there anything I can do to prevent other ingame friends to react the same? Why can’t some people accept that sometimes I do want to play, but don’t want to chat? Taz’Dingo, Anonyma

Let me begin by telling you I had an Arcane Brilliance column about halfway done last week before a family health emergency intervened, preventing me from finishing it. The column was going to be all about predicting what the new revamped talent trees were going to be like. Now that Cataclysm beta build 12479 has dropped upon us like manna in the desert, the entirety of that now-ancient text is so outdated as to be worthless. Let me assure you that it was witty, and brilliant, and possibly mankind’s greatest written work — art of such singular value that small children would have been taught of it from textbooks with my picture upon their covers. But, alas, now it is gone, relegated forever to a remote corner of my hard drive, never to be seen by human eyes. The literary world mourns.

Still, I was able to salvage one small fragment of it. It is but one of a batch of haiku I wrote about Improved Polymorph. I will reprint it here, because whatever else this monumental beta build has altered, my passion for this new talent remains.

Discipline priest and reality TV field producer Jordan Peterson shows discipline indeed in maintaining two ICC raiding characters while working on the road for weeks and months at a time. Despite long days unspooling endless hours of production arrangements and endless drama filming interviews for The Marriage Ref, the Kingslayer has managed to carve a reliable nightly niche for 10-man progression raiding. With four twinks and two end-game raiding characters, Peterson balances perpetual travel, bad hotel connections, a fiancée (who happens to raid with him), work and interviews with playing WoW … “But I find time,” he declares.

Yes, folks, it’s another 15 Minutes of Fame with just another non-basement-dwelling, non-Cheetos-munching WoW player … The trolls who proliferate that stereotype all over the internet must really hate us, don’t you think? The word priest is derived from the Greek work presbyteros, meaning “elder.” While Dawn Moore is neither Greek nor an elder, she has 300 days played between her various priests (two-thirds of which was probably spent AFK) and will do her best to relay the information learned in those days each week in Spiritual Guidance.

This week instead of one of my typical, eloquent (ha!) introductions, I am going to tell you a story. A story about a machine. The machine was an ancient treasure, crafted by the titans and unearthed by a young priestess. The machine was very powerful and was said to hold the answers to all questions, even the ultimate ones. The priestess honored this machine with her life and wished only to do good with it.

One day, while traversing the icy northern valleys of the Storm Peaks, the priestess crossed paths with a leopard. A snow leopard. The priestess slowly took guard, not wishing to agitate the beast. It seemed to be of no matter, however, as the beast was furious with hunger, and it leapt at her without hesitation. The priestess scrambled to her right, calling up a protective shield as the leopard came at her. It seemed she would have to do combat; she began to recite the words to a holy prayer aloud. Unfortunately, before she could finish her prayer, the beast broke her barrier and tackled her to the ground. As she fell, she panicked, thinking of the machine tucked carefully in her satchel. The sound of metal crunching and contorting split through the sounds of the leopard’s growls. Or maybe it was just the sound of the priestess’ heart? Whatever it was, the priestess screeched in anger, frightening the animal off of her as she called forth the shadows. A protodrake later dined on the leopard’s broken corpse.

The priestess hurried to Mimiron, master tinkerer and watcher of the titans. She begged him to repair the machine but he shook his head sadly. The machine was ruined, and only the absent titans themselves could restore it. The priestess lowered her head solemnly.

The Cataclysm beta is at times a little off putting. Flying over zones is an alien experience that is still somewhat strangely familiar. There aren’t really words to describe the disconnect you feel — it’s got something to do with the newness of the old zones. Suddenly that place that had been a lake for the past five, six years is gone. Suddenly entire rock faces have vanished. And in the case of Azshara, suddenly large parts of the landscape have taken a dive into the ocean.

For Alliance players, Azshara wasn’t really much of a zone to begin with — there are a few quests at Talendris Point in Azshara, a few more neutral quests here and there, and of course the level 50 class quests and the quests for the Hydraxian Waterlords — other than these however, Azshara was simply a mystery. At Talendris Point both Alliance and Horde players can find an NPC named Loh’atu, a tauren who will give quests to either faction. He’ll also tell you a little bit about the history of the area, but doesn’t really go into great detail.

And that’s always been the major problem with Azshara — there wasn’t really anything of significance to be found there, generally speaking. Unlike Felwood, Feralas, Tanaris, Un’goro or any of the other Kalimdor zones in vanilla WoW, Azshara seemed to be a zone that consisted of large amounts of land that you had to run over and mobs you had to dodge to get to the one place that had the one item for the one quest you needed to complete. Everything else? It could be ignored. And so it was — most players tended to skip the zone entirely after Burning Crusade‘s launch. There are, however, small bits and pieces of lore and quest lines that shouldn’t be missed, quests that will be disappearing entirely when Cataclysm hits. Let’s take a look at the list, and the reasons why you should do these quests now, after the break.
