Farming is a general term for spending time collecting various items for the sole purpose of selling them or using them. Like if you need a bunch of cloth for tailoring you could go “farm” the cloth by killing many of the enemies which drop it, or if you’re saving up money for a mount you might go “farm” for ore to sell on the auction house.
It’s better than buying gold because buying gold will likely get your account banned, deleted, or hacked.

The answer above mine explains it well, but I wanted to add that buying gold is also ridiculously expensive, and can lead to easy hacking. Just last night there was a guy on general chat who signed on to find all his gold and rare items missing. Not only would farming save you real life money, it will keep your account safe from hackers, cheaters, and banning.

BUYING WoW GOLD WITH REAL CURRENCY VIOLATES THE TERMS OF SERVICE, AND YOU CAN BE BANNED FOR THIS OFFENSE.
Plus u never wanna give out ur account info to ANYONE, even ur friends. Sure, maybe you trust them, but they might tell someone else who you don’t even know, then one day you log in and ur bankbox is empty.
